Surin's father Orchis and mother Lilium moved to Meida from an undisclosed planet not long after Hibi/Lia, Surin's younger "sister", was born. The two of them don't like to talk about it much and Surin has no memory of the planet. She is very close to Hibi/Lia though, and Hibi often follows her around, leading Surin to act as a mentor to her.

Surin acts as an entertainer and is part of a small troupe that performs songs and tells stories. Surin's flute playing is highly appreciated, as are the great stories she tells. After discovering her senshi abilities Surin often uses them to add to the drama of her stories, however she is no longer performs as regularly due to her duties.

After the awakening of Sailor Meida, the first generation elders were curious whether there were more Senshi on their planet. Surin was selected and spent some time training with a small group of students that had been suspected to hold Star seeds. She was a little confused as to what she was doing there, as many of them seemed to posses talents much greater than hers. After a few weeks training though, their training camp was attacked. This triggered a display of powers and she was soon presented with the Hinil Water Lilly Brooch and Hair Pin. She has no idea what the Hair Pin does. She has been known as and able to transform into Sailor Hinil ever since.
